Topic: Improved Post-vasectomy Specimen Stability Summary: To serve you better, Westcliff Medical Laboratories (WML) has improved the specimen stability requirements for post-vasectomy semen analysis specimens, allowing 24 hours stability at room temperature and changing the results process.
Key Facts: Semen analysis for post-vasectomy (test code 1197) reporting has been changed to reflect the presence or absence sperm. Previously, the test also indicated motility. However, to review the sample for motility required a very fresh sample (ca. less than 1 hour), possibly inconveniencing patients. To improve the convenience for patients, the specimen stability has been increased to 24 hours at room temperature.
Reporting Changes: Post-vasectomy semen analysis reporting comments have been changed to ‘Sperm Present’ or ‘No Sperm Seen.’
Reference Range Changes: The reference interval for post-vasectomy sperm count is ‘No Sperm Seen’.
Collection Process and Transport Process: The collection process has not changed. Please submit entire contents of ejaculate in a sterile cup. The transport requirements have been increased to allow for 24 hour specimen stability. Please provide the specimen as soon as possible post-collection to a WML PSC or courier.
In-lab turnaround Time: The assay is performed seven days per week and reports within 24 hours of receipt in laboratory.
