Topic: Improved Serum Protein Electrophoresis Interpretation Summary: Westcliff Medical Laboratories (WML) is improving its reporting of normal serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) (test code: 1136) results effective July 22, 2009.
Key Facts: All abnormal SPEP results are reviewed by a pathologist and are accompanied by an interpretation. This interpretation usually requires an additional 24-48 hours. Normal patterns, on the other hand, do not require pathologist interpretation and the extra turnaround time.
WML will improve the reporting of normal patterns by implementing the following message to appear at the end of the quantitative results for SPEP results:
Normal appearing electrophoretic pattern seen. Pathology interpretation not required.
Normal patterns will continue to be accompanied by a printout of the electrophoretogram. If the results require pathologist interpretation, please allow an extra 24-48 hours turnaround time.
Collection Process and Transport Process: The collection process has not changed. Please submit a centrifuged serum separator tube or its aliquot. The transport requirement is unchanged – refrigerated or frozen.
In-lab turnaround Time: The assay is performed five days per week and reports within 24 – 48 hours of receipt in laboratory.
If you have further questions please contact your WML sales representative or the client service department at 800-373-9505.
